Declaration for the entire device

What happened

The wireless module in the indoor farm had its own certificate. That seemed to cover the matter, as it was stated in black and white that the module complied. However, such a certificate pertains to the module and not to the device in which it is installed. The FlaxFarm consists of a two-meter cabinet around that module, with a 230-volt connection and a PCB that controls the rest. The interference emitted by that assembly and what happens if something goes wrong is not documented in any module file.

We determined which legislation applied to the composite device and had it measured as a whole for electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility. These requirements are built into the Radio Equipment Directive, so without those measurements on the whole unit, there is nothing to declare about the product. More challenging than the measurements themselves was the space required for them: a two-meter-high cabinet does not fit in every setup. There was space available at our testing partner, Normatic.

Vegger had already taken steps that shortened the process. All components originated from the EU and bore their own CE marking, so the necessary information for each part was already established. What remained was the risk assessment, advice on the product label, and the compilation of the technical file.

With the declaration of conformity included, the FlaxFarm could enter the European market as a single product, rather than as a cabinet containing a certified component.
