Why there is no fixed price tag<\/h2>\n\n

CE marking is not a certificate that you apply and pay for somewhere. It is the proof that you have demonstrated that your product meets European requirements. The cost of that proof depends on your product, the applicable legislation, and the associated assessment route. <\/p>\n\n

A splash guard, a drill, and a medical device all fall under a CE obligation, but the path to compliance differs greatly. One product can be placed on the market with a self-declaration, while another must first go through a laboratory and a notified body. <\/p>\n\n

Anyone who quotes you an amount without knowing your product is making an assumption. The first question is not what it costs, but which route your product must follow. <\/p>\n\n

What the costs consist of<\/h2>\n\n

The total price is the sum of individual components. Not every component is necessary for every product. It involves classification, risk assessment, tests, the technical file, the declaration of conformity, and potentially a notified body. On top of that comes the maintenance of the file. <\/p>\n\n

    \n\n
  1. Determining which legislation applies.<\/b> Identifying which directives and regulations your product falls under. This is intellectual work, but it directs all subsequent steps and therefore all costs. <\/li>\n\n\n
  2. Risk assessment.<\/b> Mapping out the risks and demonstrating that you have covered them.<\/li>\n\n\n
  3. Tests.<\/b> Depending on the legislation, tests are required, for example, for electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility, or radio requirements. Once tests are mandatory, this is usually the largest expense. <\/li>\n\n\n
  4. Technical file.<\/b> Drawings, test reports, and assessments come together in a file that you must be able to present for years.<\/li>\n\n\n
  5. Declaration of Conformity.<\/b> The document by which you formally declare that the product complies. You sign it yourself. <\/li>\n\n\n
  6. Notified body.<\/b> For some products, an external inspection body is mandatory. This is a separate and usually much higher expense. <\/li>\n\n<\/ol>\n\n

    Additionally, there is maintenance. There is no annual CE license, but legislation changes and products are modified. Your file must follow those changes. <\/p>\n\n

    The factor that determines your price<\/h2>\n\n

    One mechanism explains most price differences: have you fully applied the harmonized standards? If so, you may in many cases self-declare via internal production control. If not, the legislation prescribes a more rigorous route, involving a notified body. <\/p>\n\n

    Radio equipment demonstrates this most clearly. Article 17 of the Radio Equipment Directive states that you may use internal production control when you have applied the harmonized standards whose references are in the Official Journal. If you have not applied those standards, or have only partially applied them, your product must undergo an EU-type examination or full quality assurance. The same applies when such standards do not exist. <\/p>\n\n

    This is not a minor detail. It is the difference between a file you close yourself and a process involving an external body. A deviation from a standard that your designer found logical can therefore change your route and your budget. <\/p>\n

    \n\tAsk your supplier for the standards, not the certificate<\/b>\n\t

    A supplier often sends a test report with a standard number on it. The question that matters is whether the standard has been fully applied and which clauses have been tested. If there is a deviation, that determines which assessment route applies and therefore what the process costs. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n

    What you pay in practice<\/h2>\n\n

    The amounts below are market indications based on our own files, not a quote. They primarily show the relationship between the three situations in which products usually fall. The actual price depends on your product and the state of your documentation. <\/p>\n\n

    Note the second row. That is where the most variation occurs, because the number of tests depends on the number of applicable laws. A product with a radio function, a power supply, and a battery affects three regimes simultaneously. <\/p>\n
